Meet the Meili Team: Juan

We talk a lot about the robotics industry, mobile robots, fleet management software, interoperability issues, and so on. However, behind the scenes exists a passionate team of awesome individuals who are all contributing to the growth of Meili Robots in their own, unique way. Since we have been sharing a lot of industry-related articles so far, we thought it would be nice to finally share a more personal side of Meili Robots: our team!

In this series of blog posts, we introduce our team members one by one. This time, we are getting to know Juan García Briz, our Technical Lead.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role as Technical Lead at Meili Robots.

“My name is Juan and my work as a technical lead covers a wide spectrum of functions. If I had to represent my work in a flowchart, it would all start in the meetings I have with the product owner or directly with clients or potential clients. My role is to listen to their requests and evaluate their technical feasibility. Then, I translate these requests into a language that the technical team understands, and assess together with them the feasibility and the timeline for their execution. After this phase, conversations turn into tasks. From now on, my job will be to supervise the progress of the tasks and be there to clarify any type of doubt that may arise during the development. Finally, when the developers consider if the requirements have been met, my job is to carry out the first tests from a technical point of view to validate the features. Then, the ball returns to the court of the product owner who will have to confirm that everything works as expected.”

What does a typical day look like for you?

“There is no standard day in the technical lead work I do at Meili Robots. Due to the breadth of functions, and because I am the link between the business and technical parts of the company, my calendar is marked by the needs of both parties.

But I will try to summarise what a typical day could look like:

  • General meeting with all members of the company, where the work of the previous day is reviewed and the work plan for the current day is shared.

  • Review task panel and their progress

  • Call from someone from the team to clarify some aspect of the development

  • Meeting with potential clients during which the business team needs technical support to clarify certain details. In these meetings, demos are normally held, showing the operation of the application in real-time, showing the connection of the robot fleets with Meili FMS and going through the different features of our product.

  • Testing the newly implemented features. Normally during these tests, improvements or errors are discovered that need to be reported to the technical team so they can work on a solution.

  • I also collaborate with the developers from time to time, programming small pieces of code — specifically in the most robotic part of the system (Meili Agent)”

How long have you been part of the Meili Team?

“I was the first person with a technical background hired at Meili Robots — back in October 2019 — so I have been with the company for approximately two and a half years.”

What is your favourite part of your work as Technical Lead?

“My favourite part is the human contact with the different parts of the team and seeing how, at the end of the day and after much effort, the business and technical parts of the company work come together as one. It is very important to know how to listen to everyone and try to mediate between the different positions.”

What do you think is most exciting about working with robotics?

“It is exciting to work in a relatively new and constantly changing field. This allows me to be learning day by day, which I consider to be a requirement to progress in the workplace.”

Can you give us a brief description of your background?

“I have a background in industrial engineering, specialising in electronics and automation. As a student, I have lived in Spain, the Netherlands, and Brazil, taking different courses while being in contact with an international environment. I have previously worked as an assistant to the IT infrastructure architect for a large bank in Spain. Later, I had the opportunity to work in a quite different field: the field of energy management, carrying out development and technical management tasks. In both companies, the most important part of my role was always the communication between the business/client part and the technical part. This experience has helped me in my current role at Meili Robots.”

Which professional accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

“My greatest pride is seeing how, by giving an answer or carrying out a task, my colleagues can continue their work in a more efficient way. Currently, I am very proud to have seen Meili Robots born, and to see how in a period of just two years, we have gone from an initially crazy idea to a real product that can solve real problems in the industry.”

What do you like to do when you are not working?

“I am a very social person, so what I like most is to meet my friends and to talk, have a beer, or practice some sports.

Another of my great hobbies is travelling and meeting people from all over the world.

As for solo hobbies, I love movies, and I am capable of spending many hours hooked on series.”

What is a fun fact about you many people may not know?

“I have a twin brother — who knows if at some point he is the one who is attending the Meili morning meetings :) :)”
